Over the years of teaching I have collected quite a few nice and colloquial phrases that are frequently used in everyday conversation and present difficulty for learners. Here are some, and I will be adding more soon. To test your knowledge of English, look at the Russian sentences below and give their English equivalents. Got them right? How many?
1. Он такой ‘упертый’ (делает все только по-своему)!
2. – Где Мария?
- Она опаздывает.
3. Ты так скромна в отношении своего английского.
4. Нетрадиционные взгляды? Ты меня заинтриговал!
5. Ты что, ходил в магазин?
6. У этого велосипеда хороший ход.
7. Эти ссоры меня выматывают.
8. Не унывай!
9. Марк там тоже был, и так уже ему хотелось похвастаться своим новым авто!
10. Сначала все было прекрасно, а потом у нас кончились деньги.
11. Ну, заходите. Присаживайтесь, чувствуйте себя как дома.
12. Я, может быть, зайду к тебе как-нибудь на днях.
13. - Где он?
- Да за молоком вышел.
14. Как оказалось, это был ее отчим. / Он оказался ее отчимом.
15. Я не могу сейчас принять решение, мне надо все как следует обдумать.

- She is running late.
3. You are so modest, in regards to your English.
4. Unconventional views? You have piqued my curiosity!
5. Have you been out to the shops?
6. This bike runs well.
7. This arguing is draining me out.
8. Chin up!
9. Mark was there as well, and so keen to show off his new car.
10. Everything was fine at first, and then we ran out of money.
11. Come on in. Have a seat, make yourself comfortable / make yourself at home.
12. I may drop by one of these days / some day.
13. - Where is he?
- Just popped out to get some milk.
14. He turned out to be her stepfather.
15. I can’t make a decision right now. I need to sleep on it.
