Many euphemisms are so delightfully ridiculous that everyone laughs at them. The same sophisticates who look down their noses at little boys' room and other euphemisms of that ilk will nevertheless say that they are going to the bathroom when no bath is intended,- that Mary has been sleeping around even though she has been getting precious little shut-eye,- that John has passed away or even departed (as if he'd just made the last train to Darien),- and that Sam and Janet are friends, which sounds a lot better than "illicit lovers."

Thus, euphemisms are society's basic lingua non franca. As such, they are outward and visible signs of our inward anxieties, conflicts, fears, and shames. They are like radioactive isotopes. By tracing them, it is possible to see what has been (and is) going on in our language, our minds, and our culture.

Patrick (Pat) Brereton and Roderick (Roddy) Flynn are two specialists on Irish cinema who were born and educated largely in Ireland. At present, both are employed by the Dublin City University’s School of Communications, where Dr. Brereton is a lecturer in film and media studies and chair of the bachelor’s program in multimedia, and Dr. Flynn is a lecturer and chair of the master’s program in film and television. Both have written extensively not only on Irish cinema but also on cinema more broadly. A reference book like this was a new venture for them, but they have achieved a wonderful result— a useful tool for their students and others, both at home and abroad.

The Historical Dictionary of the Eisenhower Era is one of the more interesting volumes in the series. It deals with a crucial time of transition, and it highlights the good and bad aspects, revealing aclearer overall picture. Just how many significant events occurred inless than a decade is immediately apparent from the chronology. What they added up to, taking the positives and the negatives, is explained more cogently in the introduction. But the dictionary section is the key to a deeper understanding of the 1950s. Its roughly 400 entries look at many important aspects, not only domestic politics and foreign policy but also education, the economy, technological innovations, arts and sciences, and popular culture. Since the period is so fascinating, and the nostalgia for it keeps growing, readers will be pleased to find a substantial bibliography leading to more, sometimes detailed literature on the various relevant topics.
This book was written by Burton and Diane Kaufman, who lived through the Eisenhower era with considerable pleasure and few regrets, to judge by the lively text they give us in what is all too often a rather glum genre, the encyclopedia. They grew up during the 1950s and not long after began their respective careers. Diane initially taught in Kansas, where she was awarded for her leadership in elementary and secondary education, and then worked as a reference librarian and archivist in Kansas, Virginia, and Ohio. Burton had a busy career teaching at the University of New Orleans, Kansas State University, and Virginia Tech, where he headed the history department. He later became, in addition to professor of history, dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Miami University in Ohio, and he is presently adjunct professor of history at the University of Utah. Both of them have written on the
Eisenhower era before, and both are busily working on a forthcoming volume in this series dealing with the Carter era.

The Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, more commonly known as Libya, rests at the intersection of three worlds--Arab, African, and Mediterranean. After 35 years that witnessed the explosion of information on virtually every subject, we are in the age of synthesis: encyclopedias and dictionaries abound. With the recent 12-volume Dictionary of the Middle Ages ( LJ 2/1/83) and the older one-volume Oxford Classical Dictionary ( LJ 5/1/71. 2d ed.), this forms a trio of essential resources. The 100 contributors, many of them distinguished experts, have succeeded in their "attempt to collect within a single work data concerning all fields of Byzantine studies." The 5000-plus entries provide authoritative coverage not only of "traditional" topics such as art and architecture, basilica, agriculture, chronology, geography, literature, medicine, military strategy, science, and theology, but also many facets of everyday life--baths, clocks, houses, locks and padlocks, etc. The social historian will be especially pleased with the entries on abortion, childbirth, criminal procedure, food and diet, homosexuality, marriage and the family, names, prostitution, and slavery. The editor deserves special thanks for the uniformly lucid and readable style, for the clear illustrations, and for the useful maps, though the captions are not very informative. Three caveats: many terms appear only in Greek transliteration without adequate definition or explanation; the bibliographies are often skimpy; and the genealogical tables lack the emperors' regnal years. Still, this will endure as the first book the beginning student or the advanced scholar will reach for on the 1100-year history of Byzantium. Academic, large public, and research libraries must acquire this treasure.
