What do you think about a civil marriage? What are pros and cons?
Can't see any cons except for one: no fairy-tale wedding that every girl dreams of. You don't see any cons, but what about pros? May be people have a sence of a free choice. Nothing links them exept their will and wishes. Oh, one more 'con'. It's difficulty in travelling to certain countries, not so much as a tourist but on a business visa. Some countries won't grant your partner a partner's visa unless you are 'properly' married. This proved to be a real hiccup for a colleague of mine when her partner was offered a job in South Africa.

For many people civil marriage is the method of avoiding mistakes in legal marriage, it is the preparing to to this one.
I think you are confusing just living together like a girlfriend and a boyfriend with civil marriage. The latter is a proper marriage but without the marriage certificate. People live together, buy property together, have kids together, go on holidays together and just don't bother about registering their relationship. Is civil marriage (in Australia called a de facto relationship) legal in modern Russia? I mean do people in a de facto relationship have the same rights as people who are 'legally' married?

Lawful marriage protects women because in case of divorce the property will be divided. Men like freedom and they do not like the marriage. If man respect his woman, he must agree with marriage.
As I've already mentioned, this depends on legislation as in many countries partners in a de facto relationship have exactly the same rights and responsibilities as in legally registered marriage. BTW, you said the 'marriage' protect women. What about men? Sometimes it's the woman who own a property or business! Women also like freedom, don't you agree. In any case, in the modern world, women can earn as much as their husbands - and even more - and are quite capable of looking after themselves.
